Fancy Dress Themes, Costumes for Birthday Party

Posted on Thursday, November 5, 2009 in Childrens Fancy Dress

Don’t children just love birthdays! It is the perfect time to play and have fun, and what better way to do that than to dress up in a  fancy dress costume  and play at being a princess or or a clown

Children’s birthday parties are usually a much larger event than any adult’s birthday party, and obviously this means that a lot more effort has to be put in to make it a perfect event. Girls specially love having a fantasy setting with lots of other things such as games, beautiful cake, fancy dresses and lot of decoration.

One of the most popular themes at children’s birthday parties is fancy dress. Since all children like dressing up as their favourite superhero or fairy story character, a birthday allows them to dress up and really show off in front of their peers and enjoy a night as someone else.

A favourite costume for girls is dressing up as a princess. Princess themes are really popular not just because of the many cartoons that feature beautiful princesses, but also because this allows the little girls to get their wish of dressing up like their mothers and look grown up.

Or they might want to play with the magic of being Tinkerbell, along with the amazing fantasy adventures of Peter Pan

If your daughter wants a princess costume, don’t worry. It isn’t as complicated as it sounds. While you can definitely buy the entire costume at a children’s store, you can also save some money and conjure one up by yourself with the things you have in your home.

To start with, you will need to figure out the main dress. For this, you should look for a fancy dress that your daughter already has. If you don’t have a dress in the house that you could use, ask friends who have daughters that are older than yours and see if they have an old one lying around which they can give to you. It’s a plus point If the dress is in pastel colours, or is white. If it’s in some dark colour, then you can either consider bleaching and dying it (with the owner’s permission of course), or ask your daughter if she is ok with the darker colour.

Now that the dress is here, you need to change it (again, with the owner’s permission). Feel free to add as many ruffles, feathers, beads, or any other fancy embellishments onto it as you think your daughter will like. Make sure, you don’t make it too heavy or awkward to wear, and that it doesn’t end up looking funny.

Moving on, you will need to make a tiara and wand, and other accessories. You can get your little tot to help you with this. Give her some tin foil and ask her to bend it into bracelets, rings, or other jewellery she wants to wear. While she does this, you can take plastic tubing and cut-out a star shape from some cardboard. Join these two into a wand shape, and then put some pink (or any colour that looks good with the dress) ribbon all around it and glue it together. If you want, you can make a tiara or a pointy hat with some cardboard too. Just make sure that the tiara is silver in colour and fits your daughter’s head comfortably.

That’s it. That’s all it takes to make a perfect fancy dress costume for a birthday party at almost no cost.

On the other hand if you want a quick solution, buy a ready made fancy dress costume online and free yourself up to get on with all the other party preparations

Halloween is the time to make a party and get creative with fancy dress costumes

Looking for some ideas for your children’s fancy dress party? This article is a step by step guide helping you choose a costume for your child.

1.Deciding on a theme

This one might have already been decided for you, given that many fancy dress parties are themed in some fashion (especially at Halloween!). Let’s assume however that your child has been invited to, say, a birthday party, and no theme has been specified.

For children, choosing a fancy dress theme is quite straightforward, and is largely dependant on whether you are catering for a boy or a girl.

Boys

For boys (and men), the best fancy dress themes are surrounding their favourite TV, film and comic book characters. Other good themes are westerns and pirates.

Girls

For girls, there tends to be less demand for comic book characters than for fairytale characters – wanting much more to look pretty than fearsome. Themes for girls generally feature dresses, wings and all manners of decidedly sparkly outfits!

2. Choosing an outfit

Once you have picked a theme for your fancy dress costume, you will have narrowed down your search to a much smaller selection. In the case of superhero and TV & film costumes however you might find that there are still a great deal to choose from, given their high popularity.

Fancy Dress Costume Ideas

The best bet is to either find out if your child has any preferences, or if not then simply take a look around and see what jumps out at you.

There are many fancy dress shops distributed across the UK and other countries, several of which may be local to you to visit. If you can’t find a fancy dress shop, or they don’t supply what you are looking for, there is a wide range of online stores which supply a vast selection of costumes.

If after looking around you are still stumped, I have listed out a few ideas for boys and girls below:

3. To buy or to hire?

If you are looking to hire a costume, you are likely to only get this service from a physical store; however you may still be able to view the product range available online.

Costume hire is quite cheap but for the biggest benefit you will need to hire an expensive outfit – for cheap costumes you may pay a decent percentage of the purchase price to hire it, so why not go all the way and re-use it in the future?

For buying costumes the internet is a fantastic resource for finding and comparing different fancy dress outfits. You may understandably have some reservations about buying online as you don’t know if the costume will fit, but most children’s fancy dress costumes only tend to come in one size for a certain age group so buying from a store wouldn’t be any different to online.

4. Completing your costume with accessories

After you have chosen your costume, there may be some finishing touches that need to be made in order to make the outfit look complete. Not to fret, there is a plethora of fancy dress accessories available both in stores and online. These accessories range from swords and wands to halos and horns, and you should be able to find just about anything you are looking for by doing a search on your favourite search engine.
